The slow transformation of our living room

How we furnished our own living room with finds — over three years, one piece at a time.

Our living room didn't look like this when we moved in. It looked like most living rooms: a sofa, a coffee table, a lamp bought in a hurry.

It took three years to get it where it is now. It's the slowest decorating we've ever done — and the one we're happiest with.

First came the lamp A vintage Murano pendant from an estate sale in Hellerup. It hung as the only thing on the ceiling for the first six months, while the rest of the living room stayed beige and cautious. That lamp was the thing that pulled everything else into focus.

Then a rug A Persian rug from a moving sale in central Copenhagen. Suddenly the sofa wasn't floating any more — it had something to stand on.

Then the coffee table The self-built marble table we've written about before. It replaced an IKEA table we'd had for seven years.

Finally the pictures A couple of old framed advertising prints. A small ceramic relief. A drawing by a friend. Walls that have personality because the things are chosen — not bought all at once.

It's not a formula. It's just what happens when you don't rush.
